DAY
1 DEPARTURE FROM NORTH AMERICA
Enjoy full meal service on your wide- bodied flight to Glasgow.
DAY
2 ARRIVE GLASGOW - STIRLING - EDINBURGH
(3 NIGHTS)
You will be met at the airport by your Casterbridge Tour Manager/Guide
where we board our own private coach and are transferred to
our hotel in Edinburgh, Scotland's capital. En route we will
visit Royal Stirling Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was
crowned. Nearby is the Wallace Monument, which commemorates
the Scottish hero's victory over the English at Stirling Bridge
in 1297. Upon arrival in Edinburgh, your guide will be pleased
to take you on some introductory sightseeing.
DAY
3 EDINBURGH (CASTLES AND KINGS)
Our Walking Tour will begin at Edinburgh
Castle, where we will take a guided tour. There was a
fortification here 1300 years ago, and the castle was a royal
residence from the 11th century. More recently, the castle
has been the home of military garrisons and the famous Military
Tattoo. We will see the Great Hall, the Scottish Crown Jewels
and St. Margaret's Chapel, the oldest building in the city.
We will then take one of the most fascinating and historic
walks in Europe, the Royal Mile, stopping first at
Parliament Square to visit St. Giles Cathedral. St
Giles was at the center of the Protestant Reformation in Scotland,
and John Knox, who had been appointed as Minister of Edinburgh,
preached there from 1560 to 1572 and eventually became the
first Presbyterian Church. We continue along the Royal Mile
to visit the John Knox House. The house dates from the early
sixteenth century and today is run by the Church of Scotland
where we will see artifacts associated with Knox and the Reformation.
DAY
4 DAY TRIP TO ST ANDREWS AND PERTH
This morning we travel to the beautiful university
city of St. Andrews, overlooking the North Sea. For several
centuries St Andrews was the ecclesiastical center for Scotland
and was the setting for a number of John Knox's denunciations
of Roman Catholicism. We will visit Holy Trinity Church
where Knox preached his first and last sermons. The University
of St. Andrews was founded in 1410 and is the third oldest
university in Britain after Oxford and Cambridge. We will
take a look at the University and the Cathedral on our Walking
Tour, and those fond of golf can pay homage to the famous
"Old Course." This afternoon we will continue to the city
of Perth to visit St. John's Church, one of the largest
in Scotland. The reformation in Scotland began here in 1559
after a sermon by John Knox. The remainder of the day is yours
to spend at leisure.
DAY
5 EDINBURGH - HADDINGTON - KELSO -
BERWICK-UPON-TWEED (1 NIGHT)
A short distance east of Edinburgh is the picturesque
town of Haddington where John Knox was born. The exact
year of his birth is uncertain, but the consensus is sometime
between 1505 and 1515. We will have a brief bus tour of the
town which will include the Old Knox Academy which
has an imposing Statue of John Knox on the Tower. We will
continue to Kelso, in the heart of the Scottish Borders,
to visit Floors Castle, the largest inhabited castle
in Scotland and is home to the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe.
We will tour the castle and see the priceless European paintings,
furnishings, and tapestries. Our journey will continue as
we drive into England to the city of Berwick-Upon-Tweed.
It was here in 1550, after being released from the French
Galleys that Knox served here as local Pastor. In Berwick,
Knox introduced a new format for the celebration and distribution
of Communion. He, drawing on the influence of his mentor Calvin,
believed that Christ was present in the entire service and
not just locked into the elements of bread and wine.
DAY
6 BERWICK-UPON-TWEED - MALTON - YORK
(2 NIGHTS)
Today we will travel south to Yorkshire where our
first stop will be at Castle Howard, one of Britain's
finest stately homes, located in the beautiful Howardian Hills.
Built in 1699, it is still the home of the Howard family.
The house, distinguished by its famous dome, has an enormous
collection of art treasures and antique sculpture. Later this
afternoon we will make our way to the medieval city of York.
After checking in to our hotel, we will take a tour of York
Minster, perhaps England's most famous cathedral.
DAY
7 YORK (A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME)
Our day begins with a guided Walking Tour of medieval
York along the 13th century city walls to Stonegate and the
Shambles. We will see many historic buildings including St.
William's College and the Guildhall before arriving at the
Castle Museum. With its splendid presentation of period
rooms and the excellent reconstruction of Victorian cobbled
streets and shops, this is one of the world's most famous
folk museums. This afternoon, we will visit the Jorvik
Center, the exciting museum that depicts life in Viking
Britain. The center contains remarkably well preserved items,
including boots and shoes, pins, plants and insects. "Time
Cars" take visitors on a journey back into Jorvik, the Viking
name for York, with sights, sounds and smells as they would
have been on an October day in 948 AD.
DAY
8 DEPARTURE FROM MANCHESTER

Casterbridge Tour Manager/Guide accompanies you to the airport
